FULLNESS in Christ

The concept of fullness as an attribute of God is illuminated in Colossians 1:19, which says, “For in Him, all the fullness was pleased to dwell.” In this context, fullness signifies not merely the richness of God's essence but the expression of these profound riches. The verses emphasize that all expressions of God's abundant being, evident in both creation and the church, find their dwelling place in Christ.

Without fullness, expression is impossible; it is the abundance within that allows manifestation. Just as meager love remains inexpressible, the fullness of love enables its tangible expression. In Colossians 1:19, fullness conveys the idea of being the expressive embodiment of God's rich essence.

Crucially, the fullness, depicted as a person, is referred to by personal pronouns in the subsequent verses. This personified aspect is evident in the satisfaction of the fullness to dwell in Christ and reconcile all things through Him. The language of pleasure and reconciliation implies the fullness as a person, actively involved in these divine acts.

Further elucidation in Colossians 1:21-22 reveals that we who were once enemies are reconciled through the fullness dwelling in the body of Christ's flesh. The profound significance lies in the understanding that this fullness, expressing God Himself, not only dwells in Christ but also reconciles humanity and presents them blameless before the same fullness.

Colossians 2:9 adds another layer, stating that in Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Here, fullness refers to the expression of God's riches within Christ's physical body, emphasizing the embodiment of God's complete expression. This embodiment extends beyond Christ's earthly existence to His eternal glorified state.

Ephesians 3:19 further emphasizes the believers being filled unto all the fullness of God. This filling is not a mere saturation of divine essence but a transformation into the expression of God. The indwelling of Christ imparts the fullness of God, making believers the living expression of God, exemplifying what the church ought to be.

The distinction between riches and fullness is clarified by the understanding that the fullness completes the riches. John 1:16 emphasizes that believers receive from Christ's fullness, indicating completeness and expression. Christ, as the embodiment of God's fullness, exemplifies this completeness, with the church as the corporate expression of God's fullness.

In Ephesians 3, the Triune God's role in the economy of God is revealed. The Father strengthens through the Spirit, enabling Christ to dwell in believers' hearts, resulting in their being filled unto the fullness of the Triune God. The emphasis is on the divine dispensation into believers, culminating in the corporate expression of God through the church.

Ultimately, the fullness of God is not merely an attribute but a dynamic reality expressed through Christ and realized in the corporate entity of the church. God's economy unfolds as believers are filled unto the fullness of God, becoming a living expression of the Triune God.

Therefore, the expectation of God is that you, being filled with His fullness, become a living testament to the divine expression in the world. This divine expectation is not a distant hope but a present reality that unfolds through the ongoing work of the Triune God within believers. The implications are profound – believers, filled with the fullness of God, carry within them the power to exceed human expectations and imaginations. It is not a self-generated power but a divine one, working within believers. The glory of this divine work is not confined to individual lives but resounds in the collective worship of the church and in Christ Jesus throughout generations.

In essence, God's expectation is that the church, as the expression of His fullness, becomes a transformative force in the world. This transformation occurs not through human strength or wisdom but through the divine power at work within believers. It is a testimony to the immeasurable capabilities of God, who exceeds all human limitations and orchestrates a narrative of glory through His people.

Therefore, embrace the divine expectation – let the fullness of God permeate every aspect of your being. Surrender to the transformative work of the Triune God, allowing His power to manifest in and through you. As you are filled unto the fullness of God, you become an instrument of divine expression, participating in the grand narrative of God's glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.
