Perquisite to Understand Scripture 2B
The Eye Being Single
The Lord Jesus speaks of a profound connection between the eye and light in Matthew 6:22, symbolizing the heart’s focus as the lamp of the body. While God Himself is the source of light, the lamp—the eye—serves as the vessel that captures and releases His radiance within us. We retain this light only through a pure, single focus. The clarity of divine truth rests on this principle: only a singular, undistracted heart can receive His light fully.
“To welcome divine light, our spiritual eye must be unclouded and singularly devoted.”
But what does it mean to possess a single eye? Physically, our two eyes converge into one vision, yet spiritually, our inner sight must follow the same principle—focused solely on God. With double vision, light becomes scattered, and spiritual understanding dims. The issue, then, lies not with the light but with our divided focus. If our eye strays toward worldly attractions, our vision blurs. Thus, the single eye is the keystone of spiritual clarity, as it aligns our whole being with God’s light.
“Dual allegiances divide our vision; a singular focus unites us with divine clarity.”
Christ’s teaching on serving one master reinforces this truth: we cannot serve both God and mammon. When we attempt to, our focus splits, leading to a wavering heart. A man devoted wholly to the Lord will find light in His Word, yet any hint of divided loyalty casts a shadow over his spiritual perception. Hence, absolute consecration is the foundation of true service, aligning our life’s purpose with God alone.
“Serving two masters is a deception; only through undivided consecration can we embrace His light.”
Scripture also unveils the hindrance of wealth—or mammon—upon the spiritual eye. Many cannot see God’s truth because the pull of personal interest competes with the divine. Mammon draws the heart away, and in doing so, veils the light of God’s Word. To serve God fully, we must set aside personal ambitions, for only in abandoning our own interests does divine light penetrate.
“The heart bound by personal gain blinds itself; only in relinquishment does it find true vision.”
Christ then reveals the secret to a clear heart: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). When our wealth, efforts, and hopes rest with God, our heart aligns with Him naturally, drawing closer to His truth. Such consecration enables us to transcend material ties, granting us a single eye and undivided heart.
“The soul’s allegiance flows to wherever its treasure lies; when our treasures dwell in God, our heart follows in unwavering unity.”
A devoted life clears the spiritual eye, filling the entire body with light. True consecration illuminates our thoughts, actions, and intentions, saturating every corner of our being. This is the essence of being “full of light”: clarity pervades all aspects of life—mind, will, and purpose—shedding God’s radiance in every pathway we tread.
“A fully consecrated heart is a vessel of pure light, where divine wisdom illuminates each step.”
Thus, only those who live with an undivided heart can truly grasp the depths of God’s Word. A divided heart blinds itself; darkness will shadow all attempts to find clarity. Spiritual understanding requires more than sincerity—it demands single-minded dedication. For those who are absolutely God’s, His ways are plain; but for those with competing affections, His truth remains hidden.
“Spiritual clarity comes only to those who pursue God with a single eye; all else leads to confusion and darkness.”

A single eye, undivided and devoted solely to God, is the key to spiritual clarity, illuminating the entire being with divine light and truth, while a divided heart leads to darkness and confusion.
ReplyDeleteThis reflection explains Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6:22 about the "single eye," which is a focused heart directed only toward God.
ReplyDeleteThe eye here represents how we let God’s light into our lives. If our heart is focused on God alone, we can clearly understand His truth. However, if we focus on both God and worldly things, like wealth (mammon), our spiritual vision becomes clouded, and our understanding dims. True clarity and connection to God come only through undivided devotion.
Jesus also teaches that where we put our treasure—what we value most—is where our heart follows. If our values, time, and efforts are centered on God, our heart aligns with Him, bringing His light into our lives.
In summary, only those with a fully devoted heart can fully understand God’s Word. Divided loyalty brings confusion, but a heart focused on God alone finds clear guidance and light.
